North Carolina Listening Session - Friday 7pm

Listening session with Senator Joe Sam Queen, Representative Ray Rapp and Tom Colson. Come meet and talk with some of your elected representatives in Raleigh. 7:00 pm at the Marshall High Studios on Blannahasset Island.

Barrel House Mamas - this Saturday!

The Barrel House Mamas, a quartet of women from Asheville, NC, conjure the sweet and sultry sounds of the southern Appalachian Mountains they call home in their robust vocal harmonies and original songs.

Within the Mamas’ seamless and unique sound, claw-hammer and folk style banjo playing meets the melodic finger-picking of two acoustic guitars, with the throaty voice of old-time fiddle wailing over-top. Above all of these are the soaring, poetic three-part harmonies sung from three beautiful and distinct female voices for which the Mamas have gained regional notoriety. The result is a roots-pure and undeniably moving musical experience with hints of Appalachian old time, classic folk, the blues, a touch of country, a bit of swing, and is entirely these Mamas own.

Saw these folks several weeks back in an exceptionally rare trip to an Asheville establishment. Excellent harmonies, nice original songs, lots of fun. This gig is guaranteed and certified to brighten up your mid-winter. Check them out!

Saturday, January 31 - $10 - 8 PM. The Arts Center, 90 South Main Street, Marshall, NC

Inauguration Rocks Marshall

Despite the brutal icy conditions of the night, blowing snow and a fast tailwind headed for Texas, the Madison County Inaugural Ball rocked full tilt. The weather cooperated keeping dozens of Asheville folks at bay which was copasetic, because the house was pretty durn packed. By the time this photo was taken, the crowd was starting to thin. The weather kept some people from lingering but other than a 25' river crest, there wasn't much that was going to keep folks from putting in an appearance. Thanks to everyone who made the ball such a roaring success particularly Esther, Ed, Pat, Dave and Rob!

New Years Eve Fire

Mary Filiss' house burned to the ground New Years Eve. Luckily she was not there. We are gathering together on her behalf to raise money for her immediate and long term needs. Donations are being funneled through the Episcopal Church Of The Holy Spirit (433 Bone Camp Rd, Marshall, NC 28753) which makes giving tax deductible. If you are so inclined to help out, you can make checks out to the The Church of the Holy Spirit noting that it is for the Mary Filiss' Fund. We can all empathize with such a total loss and no home to return to. Please give what you can.
