Social Network Experiment and Good Eats

As though my list of projects isn't long enough, I feel strongly about getting a small community garden organized for the island, in downtown Marshall. It is a great location, and Kids in the Community Service program can get their service hours in by helping with the garden on a weekly basis.

Anyway, the talented David S. and I drew up this little design on a piece of notebook paper yesterday, and Ben W. scanned it in for me to share with you.

We need to get this baby tilled PRONTO. I should be there instead of typing, but i need to go to work... (which reminds me, thank you Frank for bringing your tiller to the island!)

Amy and Jennifer are donating plants and seeds! Keep it coming, join in on a "social experiment" that might prove more reciprocal than Facebook.

Eliza Lynn In Concert April 18th

Eliza Lynn will play a CD release show for her new album "Haven" at the Madison County Arts Center April 18th. Should be a really great show!

"Enormous talent" proclaims Putumayo World Music of Eliza Lynn, who most recently has recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London for XM/Worldspace's live worldwide broadcast. Eliza sings with a "big, room-filling voice - think Peggy Lee meets Bonnie Raitt - [and] wields her guitar and banjo against a sensual, sassy backdrop of jazz-flavored blues, old-time country folk and classic Memphis soul." (Harp Magazine)

Eliza - voted best singer/songwriter in the 2007 and 2006 Asheville Mountain Xpress Reader's Poll - released her debut CD, Frisky or Fair, in 2005 to critical acclaim. It showcases Eliza's "near-perfect blend of honesty and integrity in songwriting... music that envelops you like wisps of smoke." (The Beat, SC) Eliza plays clawhammer banjo and Piedmont blues guitar influenced by respected blues guitarist John Cephas.

On a recent trip to the UK, Eliza took her passion for Asheville's music scene with her. Eliza just returned from recording live at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London for Worldspace and XM satellite radio. Invited by Ted Kelly of UPOP, Eliza thrilled the studio audience of musicians and industry folks with her gutsy solo performance. This incredible opportunity was followed by an appearance at the Belfast Nashville Songwriting Festival in Belfast, Ireland.

This show will celebrate the release of her new album, "Haven." Tickets are $10, and are available by phone at (828) 649-1301 or online at www.madisoncountyarts.com

We were Lost but now we're FOUND!

WHAT IS THAT THING?! BRING IN YOUR FOUND ART OBJECTS, RELICS, THINGAMAJIGS, MASTERPIECES. THEMED EXHIBIT OPEN TO SUBMISSIONS FROM ALL.

This is an open call to all of you folks out there to bring in those things that you found and put on your porch because they looked interesting. Or you make art pieces from found objects. Or you like rusty objects covered with moss. Or whatever else you can think of that might be interesting to look at. Here's the text from the last newsletter to shed more light on the subject:

What is that rusty thing you found behind the barn when you were cleaning up this winter? The driftwood you grabbed while hiking the Laurel trail? The object you left outside for years until it became something else entirely? We want to see them, the weird relics that become dear because they look like or remind you of something else. Bring 'em on in! This will be a open, themed exhibit. Bring in your stuff. The emphasis is on objects found as-is in Madison County or artwork created from said objects. The hot news is that there will also be a found fashion show that evening as well. The rules are a little slippery on this one- just bring in the stuff and we'll sort it all out! THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THE SHOW IS APRIL 10th.

Show opens Friday April 10 and runs through May 1st.

Mystery Men rock Longnecks tonight!

Come on out to Longnecks tonight, and get your groove on to some classic cover tunes you rarely see performed live, courtesy of your hometown rockers, the Mystery Men!

Fronted by the friendly proprietor of Marshall's long-awaited, soon-to-be-open bookshop, and propelled by the driving beats of a sibling-tight rhythm section, this band is sure to get your heart pumpin' and your feet jumpin'. If you're lucky, the mysterious and elusive "E.Hub" will join the Men on lead guitar, to bring your ear some real delicious rock candy.

So get on up to the bypass, and grab a beer, a burger or a cue stick. After tonight's show, which starts at 8:30pm, the Mysterious ones will be taking a break for a couple weeks......so don't miss out!
