If you happen to be in the West Asheville area this week, Bookworks has extended its book exhibit. Well worth checking out. The demos there last Saturday were fantastic with tons of people through their doors. Probably the best open studio event I've ever been to.
And if you haven't seen "33" at the Arts Council here in Marshall. Do yourself a flavor, go yesterday.

Madison County Commissioners Approve Concrete Plant Rezoning
In a vote of 3 to 2, Madison County Commissioners approved rezoning to allow a concrete plant on the outskirts of Marshall. Eddie Fox motioned to approve the proposal, Vernon Ponder seconded the motion. Ed Wyatt was the 3rd vote which approved the plant. Debbie Ponder and Billy Roberts opposed the motion for rezoning.
The chamber of the court room was almost filled to capacity with a seeming split of about 60% opposed to the rezoning and about 40% in favor of the rezoning.
It appears a court battle is looming as to the procedural nature of rezoning process. Opponents of the rezoning filed a last minute petition objecting to numerous discrepancies in the way the whole process had been handled.

County Commission Vote Next Week On Concrete Plant
The following is a press release about the proposed concrete plant issued by the Western North Carolina Alliance which has recently started a Madison County Chapter of its organization.
On July 21 2009, the Madison County Planning Board voted to approve a rezoning request for the northwest corner of the Carolina Ready Mix Quarry from agricultural (RA) to industrial (ID). This puts it in very close proximity to residences (the closest house is approximately 200 feet and a nursing home with 100 residents is less than 1/2 mile away).
The Planning Board vote is now coming before the County Commissioners for a vote on September 10th, 2009. Please ask the County Commissioners to vote "No" on the Planning Board's recommendation!
The County Commissioners need to hear from you! As many people as possible need to speak at the meeting and to call and write the commissioners in advance! The commissioners must hear the public's concern about the rezoning both BEFORE they vote on September 10 and AT the commission meeting!

We need your help to win!
A Few Talking Points:
*Ready Mix Concrete batch plants release harmful particulates into our air and water. Dust and toxic metals, including arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, and nickel are released into our air and our water during normal operations.
These types of industries need to be remote areas that will not have the potential to affect a large number of people and properties and our natural resources, such as the French Broad River, clean air, and the area's natural beauty.
* Noise pollution is also a big concern! This plant will produce a lot of noise that will travel up and down the valley gorge and all around the residential area and town.
* The plant proposes to drill a well for a minimum of 2000 gallons of water per day. An average home uses between 130 - 200 gallons per day. Our existing need of water for bathing, drinking, food preparation, sanitation, and irrigation should NOT be jeopardized by a concrete plant using our limited well water supplies in this area.

If you will not be able to attend the meeting, please be sure to call or write the Commissioners to let them know that businesses like this have far more damaging consequences to Madison county residents than the few jobs it could provide; that we want an informed decision of the irreversible impacts on our health and our community; and that these plants should be in a remote area, not just out of sight.

Blog Cabin Tours Go Up In Flames?
It appears that some sort of rift has occurred between the DIY Network and the Preserve Communities, where DIY's Blog Cabin is located. Rumor has it that the Blog Cabin Tours are a dead deal.
It sucks that this has occurred - with Cam putting in so much work into the tours and his efforts at involving the local community. It blows too.
I, for one, appreciate Cam's efforts on behalf of the community and his trying his utmost to pass the potential benefits of having DIY's Blog Cabin located here, on to the residents, charities and artists of Madison County (I won't mention the bridges).
Our not so trusted blog reporter, Severed Erichikai is on his way to the Scripps Networks' headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee by way of a Mary Jane patch on Max Patch, to ascertain what the real lowdown on the situation is. If he ever returns or reports back in to us, we will file his full report on the situation as it un-develops.
