The Witches Ball - Friday, October 30th 9pm

Concrete Plant Hearing Tonight - 7pm at the Courthouse

The Board of Adjustment will consider the proposed Concrete Plant use on October 26th at 7pm at the courthouse. It will require 4 out of the 5 board members to grant this conditional use. Due to previous objections that this will be injurious to the community and residents, the county attorney wants the Board of Adjustments to decide if this use should be allowed at this location. The meeting is open to the public.

Town Photograph on the Courthouse Steps - Wednesday, October 28th at 5 pm

At 5 p.m. on Wed, Oct 28 there will be a photo taken of the townsfolk of Marshall. This will be used in the new town brochure. We'd like to see as many members as possible of the diverse community of Marshall bless us with their beaming faces. Pat Franklin is graciously offering her time and photography skills. Please pass this info along to your Marshall friends and come down if you have a few minutes from 5-5:15. Children are welcome.

Keith Flynn & The Holy Men at the FBI - Saturday October 24th 7pm

KEITH FLYNN and The Holy Men will be playing The French Broad Institute 68 Main Street in Marshall, NC on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 at 7 pm. General Admission tickets available at the door and in advance at Zuma Coffee and Lapland Books. Admission: $12 and $8 for students.

KEITH FLYNN is an award-winning poet, singer, and editor who has published five books of poetry and essays, and is the founder and managing editor of The Asheville Poetry Review. From 1984-1998, Flynn was the lead singer and lyricist for The Crystal Zoo, a nationally-acclaimed rock band that released three albums. This new incarnation, The Holy Men, provides musical accompaniment to poems from all of Flynn's books, as well as new songs and re-imagined versions of Flynn's back catalog of recorded material.

This incredible musical diversity can find the band shifting from swing to gospel to blues to ballad to bossa nova to boogie chug all within the same song frame. Expect a driving marriage of poetry and music unlike anything you have ever heard before.

I finally installed tracking software on the Marshall Blog  to keep track of visitors. From September 20 through October 20th, we had 1042 visits to the blog. Visits were up 180% from the month prior.

Fiddle Workshop & Concert Featuring Bobby Hicks & Buddy Spicher - This Friday & Saturday!

Bobby Hicks is well known in Madison County and around the world for his work with Bill Monroe, to name but a few. Buddy Spicher has played onstage and in the studio with the Rolling Stones, Ray Price, Bob Dylan, K.D. Lang, Willie Nelson, Henry Mancini, WEEN, and the Monkees!And these are just tips of the musical iceberg for these incredibly prolific players...These men are true musical innovators, pushing the boundaries of their instrument with flawless technique and pure tone. For fiddlers out there who want to learn more about the techniques used by these two on countless recordings and concerts,Bobby & Buddy are presenting a Fiddle Workshop on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16th, and SATURDAY OCTOBER 17th. Intermediate or advanced players only, please.

To celebrate the workshop, we are throwing a swing concert SATURDAY NIGHT at 8 pm with backing from the band “Acoustic Swing”, featuring some of the area’s most beloved players. Tickets to the Saturday Swing Concert are $15. The ladies are back for a Rummage Sale in downtown Marshall! The saleorama begins at 12pm and goes all day into the eve till 8pm....a mystery DJ will spin tunes and you will surely find something special. The warehouse is located down near Good Stuff on the opposite side of the street.

Madison County Fair, October 7th - 10th

Time for the County Fair! The Madison County Fair will be held on the fairgrounds of the Madison County Cooperative Extension Agency from October 7th through the 10th. The fair will be the 2nd county fair held in Madison County, NC since 1949. Last years' fair was a big success.

Planned events include; rides, produce and cooking competitions, livestock competitions, special contests and exhibits. 4-H certified livestock and horse shows. Registration forms are available at the Madison County Arts Center 90 South Main Street in Marshall.

Directions to 258 Carolina Lane, Marshall, NC 28753.

From Asheville take 19-23/I26 North to the Marshall Exit 19-A. Follow Hwy 25/70 North/West for 9.3 miles, after the 4 lane road becomes a 2 lane road turn RIGHT onto LONG BRANCH ROAD (Do not take the first Long Branch Road off the four lane). *See below for further directions on Long Branch Road.

From 25/70 South/East turn LEFT onto Long Branch Road.

From Mars Hill (I-26) take Exit 11 to HWY 213 toward Marshall approximately 11 miles. At the 25/70 intersection take the Asheville exit onto 25/70 SE. Once on 25/70 take the second paved road to the left, LONG BRANCH ROAD. *See below for further directions on Long Branch Road.

(Look for NC Cooperative Extension signs at each of the turn offs;
these signs will be low to the ground)

Once on LONG BRANCH ROAD go .4 miles and turn RIGHT onto KENPACK LANE (first road on the right). Then go .2 miles and turn RIGHT onto ELDERBERRY LANE (first road on the right), then IMMEDIATELY turn LEFT onto CAROLINA LANE.

Go .2 miles (you will pass ball fields on the left) and Madison County Cooperative Extension will be to your left (you will see NC Cooperative Extension sign in front of parking lot and a sign on the building).

Fresh Groundhog On Walnut Creek Road 10/1/2009 4:30 pm

A fresh groundhog is on Walnut Creek Road. This groundhog had not been flatten when I drove by and it appears that it would be good eating. Might make a good banjo head too.
