No Heated Toilet Seats? Not!

This is a great article in the Chicago Tribune, which contrasts Las Vegas and Marshall but on the title point, I beg to differ. I know at least 2 citizens of Greater Marshall who have heated toilet seats. The seat's are kept by a crackling wood stove in the winter and when it's privy time, they carry the seat outside to do their business. Folks in Madison County have had heated toilet seats for at least as long as there have been outhouses. The seats, while excess in Las Vegas, are survival out the outskirts of Greater Marshall.

Amazing Steve Davidowski's Christmas benefit concert returns Thursday, December 9, 7 p.m. at the Marshall Presbyterian Church. This mix of jazz, traditional, mountain and celtic Christmas music will feature fiddler Jamie Laval and bassist James Simmons.

Jamie is heralded as “One of North America’s finest practitioners of traditional Scottish music” (San Jose Mercury News) and “The next Alasdair Fraser” (Press and Post). The Asheville Citizen-Times writes, “One of the hottest fiddlers out there…this act has been turning heads wherever it plays.”

James Simmons' powerful dance with his string bass has delighted Madison County in past concerts with Steve.

Marshall's favorite Steve Davidowski is a pianist/saxophonist/flautist/

clarinetist. While living in Georgia in the 1970s, Davidowski was the original keyboard player in the southern fusion band The Dixie Dregs, and also performed and recorded with Vassar Clements and many others in Nashville. He is a master of jazz and is also developing a mountain music hybrid he calls Xenobilly.

Neighbors in Need is a Food Pantry and Crisis Fund serving Madison County. All concert monetary and food donations will go directly to Neighbors in Need.

NC REAL Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneurship
This course is designed to strengthen the business savvy of area farmers to help them develop and manage a profitable, environmentally sound small farm or agricultural business. The course uses hands-on experiential teaching techniques and provides opportunities for consultation with instructors and guest speakers from the academic, small business, environmental, and agricultural sectors. The course provides intensive, interactive, professional-level small business and technical training to develop specific critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for successful entrepreneurship. Emphasis is placed on market research, financing, time management, and the day-to-day activities of owning/operating a sustainable farm as a competitive, small business. Upon completion, the participants should be able to write and implement a viable business plan and obtain financing for an agricultural enterprise. (24 hrs) No fee exemption

The holiday season starts with a graceful small town ease-in at the Marshall Handmade Market this Saturday (10am - 5pm). Forget Black Friday and pure bedlam, if you want those one of a kind exquisite handcrafted items for friends and those special people, head here. The Market's being held at Marshall High Studios in Downtown Marshall, NC. There will be over 30 artists and craftspeople, soap, scents, local foods, handmade bread, organic honey, Doubletree Sorghum, Spinning Spider Creamery and hot food. The Butter Holler String Band will be playing live acoustic music - it's a great scene.

Marshall's perhaps the most intriguing of all the small towns in Western North Carolina. Pocketed in a very narrow, steep valley, this ephemeral town has literally been swept off the map several times by the mighty French Broad River, but for all those who still believe, it's still here and ripe for the tasting.

Marshall High Studios (circa 1926 - 115 Blannahasset Island) where the Handmade Market's being held, floats on an island smack in the middle of the French Broad River, directly across from downtown. It was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places after a beautiful award winning restoration.

After you visit the Market there are a few other don't miss places in town; Lapland Books (12 - 6 pm) one of the most beautiful spaces in town, at 147 North Main Street and of course the ultimate Marshall destination - Penlands Department Store (7:30am - noon) , a fantastic vintage 30's-40's department store specializing in Carhart clothing and regional gifts at 50 North Main near the Arts Center All these places should be open from noon to four

Have dinner at Zuma's, Good Stuff or Bacchus Bistro and then head over to "Come Let Us Adorn You" an Art and Fashion Show at the Arts Center (90 South Main Street). The art and fashion show runs from 7 - 9pm and is the second of its kind (clothing created with found objects), and down-home funky fun. Admission to the show is a donation of canned, or non-perishable food or cash to benefit "Neighbors in Need".

End your well-spent day with a nightcap at Goodstuff (133 South Main Street) and live music from Jake Hollifield of the Blue Rags.

If you've never been to Marshall, head out this Saturday and explore the town and see what you've been missing. Marshall eases the holidays in - on the good foot, with a generous small town spirit. The Beehive Collective releases their innovative graphic, “The True Cost of Coal:” a visual exploration of Mountaintop Removal coal mining and Resistance

A swarm is coming! The Beehive Design Collective is heading this way to release their long-anticipated “True Cost of Coal” graphic campaign!

Two years in the making, “The True Cost of Coal” is an elaborate narrative illustration that explores the complex story of mountaintop removal coal mining and the broader impacts of coal. The image is the culmination of an intensive, collaborative research process. To make the poster, the Beehive interviewed hundreds of community members throughout the Appalachian region. The Bees craft these stories into visual metaphors, weave them together in a patchwork “quilt,” and share them with audiences as a larger-than-life banner.

The Beehive’s picture-lectures prompt discussion and understanding of contemporary struggles about energy and coal, while honoring the deep legacy of the Appalachian experience. Upon seeing the graphic, Tanya Turner of Pineville, KY said, “This image is changing Appalachia. Appalachians are taking back Appalachia and this image is a tool for that change.”

The Beehive Collective is currently booking a nation-wide tour to distribute the graphic throughout the country.

Google Maps Updates Marshall Streets!

Hey folks. Two months ago, I sent in corrections for 18 different errors in Google's Maps of downtown Marshall. I just received an email from them and its looks as though all of them got fixed! (Okay, they have Hardwick on the wrong side of the building but at least it's in the ball park now). Bailey's Branch, Bridge and North & South Main are all named correctly. Redmon follows the railroad tracks, Hill street does not come directly through the court house and Roberts Hill is also labeled correctly. So if you get lost in downtown don't blame Google!

"On the Island" refers to Blannahasset Island - right across the bridge from Downtown Marshall. It's a nice walk across the river either way. There's more parking on the island than anywhere else in town.

~EVENTS~

6 - 9pm: NEW! GRAND OPENING of Foreverland across the street from Ponder Auto and close to the Depot on South Main Street. Mixture of locally handmade & vintage clothes, furniture, household items & accessories as well as musical instruments & art.

6 - 8pm: Silent Auction of unique dog beds made by local artists. Beds will be on the Island. All proceeds benefit Friends of Madison County Animals.

6 - 8pm: Paint your own dog (or cat) pottery dish. Marshall High Studios room 101. Fired Up! from Asheville will have several sizes to choose from (cost is based on size selected).

6 - 8pm: Hot New Pots exhibit opening at Madison County Arts Center. And the NEW retail space will be open for business!

6 - 8:30pm: Dog wellness information on the Island. Topics include nutrition, spay/neuter, health, first aid, animal abuse and grooming. Toenail clipping available!

6 - 8:30pm: “Flea Boutique” featuring many animal-related items and other great deals and good finds! On the Island.

6 - 9pm: Pet-i-cures at Ain’t That Cuticle featuring OPI “Paw-lish”. Many fun and unusual colors that would be purrrrrfect for your dog!

6 - 9pm: Carriage Rides down Main Street and to the Blannahasset Island (across the bridge from Main Street - weather permitting) from Worley's Farrier & Carriage Service. Rides are free but tips help cover Kevin’s expenses and are most appreciated!

7 - 10pm: The Marshall Depot (next to the caboose). The Depot on Main Street is a community sponsored venue that hosts an old time bluegrass jam every Friday night. This is always a free event, but donations are welcome. Come on out and bring your dancin’ shoes!

7:30pm: Dog contests on the Island emceed by Joe Penland. Many cool prizes donated from Mountain Tails Pet Supplies in Mars Hill, employees of Dollar General in Mars Hill, TJs Market in Mars Hill, and Weaverville Pet Pantry. All entrants will receive a special Marshall bandanna (while supplies last).

8pm: Silent Auction of Dog Beds CLOSES. Come by the tent after 8:15 to see if you have the winning bid and to pick up your bed.

8pm: Pooch Parade. Parade will start on the Island, go over the bridge to Main Street, down to Good Stuff and back up Main Street and over to the Island.

9 - 11pm: Free concert on the Madison County Courthouse steps (weather permitting). Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy the music of The Jazz Kittens along with Bobby Hicks.

9:30pm: The movie “Grease” will be shown in the parking lot of Foreverland. Bring a blanket or chair.

Please join Negativland/Mark Hosler for the gallery opening of the show "Favorite Things" at the Sean Pace Gallery in Downtown Asheville, NC on Saturday August 14th, 2010 from 7 - 10pm. Mark is a resident of Marshall and I'm sure most of you either know or would recognize him. He is most famous as the MC for last years Dog Daze French Broad Friday.

The show has 25 works of mixed media, and will be featured until September 13th. The gallery is located at 5 Walnut St. in Asheville between Lexington and Broadway. Enter through the wine bar next door if the galleries' front door is locked.

Items Needed For Flea Boutique! Dog Daze Ahead!

For the second year, the Development Association of Marshall is sponsoring its French Broad Friday event “Dog Daze” on August 13, 2010 beginning at 5 p.m. The Association is working with Friends of Madison County Animals on this event and Friends will benefit from several fund raising events to occur that Friday evening.

Here’s what’s planned: Dog contests, dog wellness mini-expo with speakers on topics such as nutrition, health, first aid, and grooming, a Silent Auction of dog beds created by local crafts and wood-working friends, a jazz concert by “The Kittens”, paint your own pottery, and a FLEA BOUTIQUE!

We’re hoping that you’ll contribute some items that you’ve been thinking of passing on to some other worthy owner to the Flea Boutique. It would be wonderful if these items were somehow animal-related in keeping with the Dog Daze theme, but gosh, most anything would be appreciated (except clothing – no clothing please – give it to our neighbors at My Sister’s Attic).

Beginning July 19th, you can drop these items at the Friends’ office opposite the post office in downtown Marshall between 2 and 4 from Monday through Friday. If you want us to pick up your treasures or if you have any questions, give Diane a call at 689-4225. If there are items that you want to put a value on, feel free to do so.

And be sure to plan to come on the 13th (with or without your canine companion(s)! No doubt you’ll find a treasure to take home as well as having a wonderful time beating the heat.

Charlotte Creative Loafing says "The combination of talent in (The Mike Strauss Band) makes for easy-to-listen-to music that seems familiar, yet fresh."

The FBI co-hosts The Marshall Auricular Hour with Lapland Bookshop & Arts and Zuma Coffee. It also hosts the Devotional Cinema Series. The FBI is curated by Actor/Director Tony Torn and Poet/Performer Lee Ann Brown.

The four-part series of weekly business workshops will be offered to visual artists at Marshall High Studios (MHS) beginning Thursday, June 24. 6pm - 9pm Carriage Rides down Main Street and to the Blannahasset Island (across the bridge from Main Street - weather permitting) from Worley's Farrier & Carriage Service. There isn't a fee for the ride, but tips are very welcome!!

Beads and bubbles will be provided to parade participants (while supplies last) to wear, throw and blow.....so there isn't any confusion, participants wear the beads, throw the beads and blow the bubbles....

8pm Best costume and best float awards at Good Stuff , 133 South Main St.

9pm Michael Cody (a Marshall native) and the Sugar Daddy Band on the Courthouse porch , taking advantage of the Courthouse lawn for a FREE CONCERT. If you're from the Asheville area, you might remember Michael, who used to play a lot of music in the area in the late 70s and early 80s. Bring your lawn chairs, but also plan to be up dancing!

And on this first French Broad Friday event of 2010, we're introducing Flow, located in the space formerly occupied by Firewalker Gallery (14 South Main Street). French Broad Friday in Marshall is back! What began as a collaborative effort between the Island Studio artists and a few Main street businesses has become a branded, monthly event, complete with funding and mementos.

Many want to know, why mermaids? I can best explain it as intended ; performance art in appreciation to the river and in jest of the Coney Island mermaids in all their splendor. We had never thought we would see the mermaids again.

Many folks continue to ask, why mermaids? I suggest we call all creatures of the river to join us in celebration of our French Broad River. All creatures great and tiny.

Marshall High Studios has two premium studios available at the Studios on Blannahasset Island in downtown Marshall. Both of the studios are 3/4 sized classrooms and the rent is accordingly less. Both available studios feature Marshall's famed North Light and look across the beautiful renovated park on the island. This is literally and figuratively the cool side of the building.

But maybe I'm just saying that because I used to be in one of these spaces and my studio perfectly met my needs. The other available studio was the other space I seriously considered when I 1st checked out the Studios in 2007. An Evening with Pearl Fryar - Thursday April 22nd, 2010!

A Man Named Pearl, a documentary that peeks into his plants and philosophies, will be shown at Belk Auditorium on the campus of Mars Hill College, April 22, 2010 at 6 pm. Mr. Fryar will also be at the event to share his unique perspective with the community.

Late in his profession as a manual laborer, Pearl Fryar began his true life's work in his backyard. At nighttime and on his days off from the cannery, Fryar worked tirelessly to turn his simple Bishopville, SC lawn into a fantastical world of topiary shrubs and artwork. He has crafted a sanctuary despite what the world told him otherwise.

Mr. Fryar will also be at the event to share his unique perspective with the community. A Man Named Pearl offers a remarkable peek into not only Fryar's beautiful garden, but also his beautiful spirit. If you don't know the story of Pearl Fryar, you are in for a treat. If you do know his story, you are in for an incredible treat. His is the story of rising above to create something from nothing.

"An Evening with Pearl Fryar" is free to the public. The event was rescheduled due to snow and is an extended part of the month-long celebration of Black History Month at Mars Hill College, and is made possible by funding from Lifeworks Learning Partnership, Madison Family Farms, and grant monies from the Ford Foundation.

In Sunshine or In Shadow: A Residency & the WNC Students Who Were There

"In Sunshine or In Shadow" is the title of the piece created by Tasmanian artist Patrick Hall along with 18 students from UNC-Asheville, Western Carolina University, Appalachian State University, Haywood Community College and Blue Ridge Community College during an International Artist Residency that took place in May 2009 at Marshall High Studios in Marshall, NC. It was hosted by the Center for Craft, Creativity & Design.

Students applied to participate and were selected by faculty. This exhibit features selected work by students who participated in this residency, as well as documentary photographs showing "In Sunshine or In Shadow" as it was being created. Also on display will be the completed piece (housed outside). The intent is multi-purposed to show a wide range of works by students from WNC universities and community colleges, to show documentation of this residency, and to display the outcome of an inter-institutional collaboration and experience for these students.

The Marshall Landscaping Project, under the direction of Jess Hocz and committee, is coming along nicely. We've planted donated hops vines along the treatment plant fence with more coming soon. Thanks to Don Byers and Byers Environmental, we also received a donation of landscaping fabric. We will be making a big push next week to plant along Main Street and in the Pocket Park. Thursday and Friday, April 15 & 16, we will need a few folks who can assist with bed preparation. If you are able to assist on these days, please let me know.

Saturday, April 17, we will have MANY volunteers and their gardening tools planting throughout the town. Starting at 9 a.m. at the Pocket Park, next to Ponders Auto. Volunteers may drop off during the day so if you aren't an early riser, come down later and we'll find a spot for you!!! Bring water, snacks, your tools, gloves, wheelbarrows, sunscreen, etc! It begins with the idea of the tableaux vivant, a living picture where the camera never moves, but the writers read a short excerpt of their work instead of silently holding their poses.

The idea of an exhibition of boxes is not a new one by any means. It is, however, an important one for the ceramic art collector. It is an opportunity to participate in a collecting tradition that has very deep roots. Ceramic art boxes have been collected and coveted throughout the centuries. From ancient Egypt to modern times the lure of a lidded vessel seems to reach across cultural and geographical boundaries. Their almost seductive nature invites us to question what is concealed, everyday objects, or someone’s most cherished memories.

For this exhibition we have invited select artists from across the country to interpret the box form. Each artist will bring to the project his or her own distinct method of surface design and construction. Marshallgras Tomorrow 6-9 pm in Downtown Marshall

Tuesday, February 16th in downtown Marshall !!!

Parade starts at 6pm from the Island, over the bridge, down Back Street to Bridge Street, and all the way down Main Street. Will include several floats, music, and the traditional Mardi Gras beads. Madison High School's "The Situation" band will also be playing on the courthouse lawn starting at 6pm.

There will be a costume contest at Good Stuff at 6:45pm followed by local musician Steve Davidowski and his band.

Costume contests will be set up with an adult category (best costume, King and Queen) and child category (best costume, Prince and Princess).

An award will also be given to the organization with the best float. If you are interested in having a float entered in the parade, please contact Connie at 649.3444 or respond to this email. Deadline for entering a float will be Monday, Feb 15th at noon.

There is also talk of several New Orleans' style food including gumbo, crawfish, a shrimp boil and King Cake (more info on that later).

The Madison County Arts Council will feature the "Art of Coffin's" exhibit by Luca Dipierro from 5 to 8pm (exhibit continues thru the end of February).

So plan to come to downtown Marshall for the Second Annual Marshall Gras event!!

Don't know if any revisions are planned for the flood stage level at Marshall, NC on the French Broad River but thought this was a statement worth noting from the National Weather Service about changes for the Asheville station on the French Broad. Stay high and dry.

Subject: change in flood stage along French Broad River at Asheville
effective March 1 2010

Noaa's National Weather Service at Greenville-Spartanburg (nws)
announces a change in the flood stage for the French Broad River at
Asheville effective March 1 2010. The flood stage will be raised
from 8 feet to 9.5 feet based on data collected daily over several
years and new flood plain inundation mapping.

Improving flood forecast accuracy is an important part of noaa's
mission and is part of noaa's NWS continuing effort to serve
society's needs for weather and water information.

More than 100 people, on average, lose their lives due to floods in
the U.S. Every year. Accurate flood forecasts provide valuable time
for people to take action and help reduce loss of property and life.

The revised flood stage is based on information provided by the
Buncombe County emergency management at Asheville, and the Buncombe
County planning and development division, as well as data collected
by the National Weather Service.

During the past several months, the local community noticed that
property damage and loss of life did not occur at the previous 8
foot flood stage. The Greenville-Spartanburg NWS worked closely
with its partners during the past several flood events to determine
that flooding did not occur until the French Broad River rose above
9.5 feet on the river gage located at Asheville.

The French Broad River at Asheville is a daily forecast point
included in the NWS advanced hydrologic prediction service (ahps)...
a web-based suite of accurate and timely forecasts related to
hydrology. A graphic and text display shows how long it will take
the river to rise to flood stage... how high the river will rise and
how long the flood will last whenever a forecast is issued.

The stream gage located on the French Broad River at Asheville is
operated by the United States geological survey (usgs)... a key
federal partner of noaa's National Weather Service. The USGS
maintains the gage equipment for data accuracy providing key
information to help the NWS forecast for our nation's rivers.

Still Life Drawing and Painting: From Chardin to Morandi 1/20 & 1/21 at Marshall High Studios

An intensive representational painting workshop is scheduled for January 20 and 21, 2010 at the beautiful Marshall High Studios - D.Helgemo Studio of Drawing and Painting. Internationally renowned painter Julyan Davis and Boston School trained impressionist/realist painter Dan Helgemo will be instructing students in a variety of disciplines relevant to the representational painter in an ongoing series of workshops designed for serious students.

This workshop, the second of the series, will focus on Still Life drawing and painting. Frequent future workshop/classes will follow regularly that will cover a range of genres/practice including portrait drawing and painting, still life painting, figure drawing and painting, the plein air landscape (on location in scenic Marshall), how to 'make it' as an artist and more. The focus of each workshop will be catered to the individual direction and area of pursuit of each student but with a push to do whatever it takes to improve on any area of weakness. Teaching will proceed through demonstration and discussion but emphasize practical application and individual instruction and critiques. Emphasis will also be given to imparting to the students the right tools for their own work in their own studios in order to develop independently as artists.

Fiction Workshop at the Arts Council (starts January 20)

Do you have a story in you?

This six-week fiction workshop will be a writers' laboratory--a place for experiments, invention, and discovery. Participants will engage in a variety of creative exercises, both in and out of class; read literary texts that may inspire their own work; share their writing and receive feedback; and, most importantly, write something new every week.

If you are looking to revise or polish a piece you've already written, this is not the class for you. Instead, it's a chance to learn fresh approaches and generate new work. My aim is for each person to finish the course with a story in progress and lots of motivation for future writing.

6-week class, January 20 through February 24, 2010, Wednesdays 4-6PM at the Madison County Arts Council (90 Main St., Marshall). Fee: $180.

Somali pirates commandeered my craft and are holding me hostage. presently my passport and my things are been held down by the pirates pending when i make payment. Celebrate the release of the Sons of Ralph's new CD "When I Find Time", Thursday, December 31st at 8:00 pm. The Arts Center at 90 South Main St., Marshall, NC is excited to have the band for New Years Eve festivities. There will be champagne, food, and of course, the great music!

Featuring former Bluegrass Boy (& Madison County Native) Ralph Lewis, his sons Marty & Don Lewis, "Cousin" Steve Moseley (also from Madison County) , and "Brother Oz" Ozzie Orengo Jr. The band has recently and repeatedly been voted WNC's best band by the readers of Mountain Xpress, and always plays a great show. Ralph has been playing since the 1940's, and Marty and Don joined him onstage at the OPRY when they were just kids - this is a deep musical river, with plenty of room for swimmin' around.

Film Shoot This Saturday In Marshall Needs A Crowd!

A local group of film makers will be filming Saturday December 19th at 3:30 PM around the Courthouse in Downtown Marshall. The film will be based on an Italo Calvino short story called "The Man Who Cried Teresa." For the film the film makers need a large group of people which in its way will be its own character. People's only obligation is to hang out with in Downtown Marshall for an hour or two on Saturday starting at 3:30. There will be lots of group yelling involved and people who would like individual lines may have them. The film makers have no real plans for the film... they just want to be creative and figure that at the least the film will show locally here in Marshall. Grab your friends and come on down!

Big Holiday Saturday - December 12th in Downtown Marshall, NC

Saturday December 12th will be a festive holiday celebration in Downtown Marshall, NC with events running from 10am - 11pm.

The Arts Center will have its annual Holiday Market from 10 am to 4 pm at 90 South Main Street. The Holiday Market will feature three floors and over 40 local artists, the annual sale at the Arts Center is a beautiful retail and social event. Madison County is home to a diverse and talented crafts community, and this sale is a concentrated opportunity for shoppers to buy gifts for the season. This year, we'll have a free raffle, hot cider, and other goodies to make the day festive. Come on out and buy local. It's always nice to meet the people who make the gifts you give...

The annual Marshall Christmas Parade will begin at 1 pm. This is a great small town parade. Expect community groups, marching bands, political figures, and Santa. The parade route will run from the island up Back St. and down Main to the courthouse then return to the island. Main St, Back St, and Baileys Branch will be closed from approx. 12:30-2:30 pm.

The Marshall Auricular Hour music and literary series returns to Downtown Marshall NC, with a reading by Local Poets Laura Hope Gill, Rose McLarney, and Local Novelist Ed Krause on Tuesday November 17th at 7pm, at The FBI, 68 North Main Street in Marshall. The performance will be followed by a reception and book signing down the street at Lapland Bookshop & Arts, 147 North Main St, Marshall. Refreshments provided by Zuma Coffee.

THE MARSHALL AURICULAR HOUR marks the partnership of three cultural destinations in Marshall, North Carolina, thirty minutes from Downtown Asheville. The FBI (The French Broad Institute of Time and The River) is an arts venue and residency program founded by poet Lee Ann Brown and actor/director Tony Torn. Lapland Bookshop & Arts offers new and gently used books and select handcrafts in a storybook cottage setting. Zuma Coffee is Marshall’s meeting place for Coffee, Tea and Fresh Baked Goods.

Laura Hope-Gill is the Executive Director of the Asheville Wordfest Media Outreach Project, a poetry project which includes an annual festival as well as public access television, public radio, and internet presentation of poetry. Her book The Soul Tree: Poems and Photographs of the Southern Appalachians, which is a collaboration with photographer John Fletcher, is currently available from Grateful Steps Press. She offers classes and one-on-one support in creativity and poetry the The Healing Seed.

Rose McLarney works for the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, and is completing her MFA in Poetry from Warren Wilson College, as well as a collection about changing landscapes. She is WNC Native, living in Madison County, NC. Upcoming Auricular Events include Wintersongs, a singalong evening of seasonal songs from around the world, scheduled for Tuesday, December 22nd at 7pm.

Town Council Replaces Statue With Dirty Dancer - Strips Courthouse Dome of Gold Leaf - Town Rattled

In a late night vote the Town Council voted to replace the statue of "Justice" on top of the County Courthouse with a new statue of a "Dirty Dancer". Town attorney Tort Reform admitted the secret over the table deal was part of the settlement in a contentious lawsuit over whether justice was or wasn't blind and whether Home Depot had stolen the name of their chain from Marshall's own Depot.

8 of the five council members voted in favor of the hush, hush deal. "We're tired of fightin' it, there's football on TV tonight and I'm sick of missing games" one council member confessed in an a exclusive off off the record comment to the Marshall Blog. One council member, recently deceased, abstained from voting.

The group "ACORN" was apparently involved in late night lobbying where they joined forces with "WALNUT" and formed a super lobby which seemingly overwhelmed popular sentiment. State Senator Slow Jam Queen promised to look into the propriety of the matter.

Longtime resident Zumwalt Pondering lay in the middle of Main Street shaking his head. "They took the Bridge from Bridge Street, they put Back Street in front of the river and now this". He took a long slow drag off his cigarette and then added "my family goes back here eight generations that I can count on one hand but with this kind of fol-der-all we may not make it to the ninth".

The dome of the Courthouse was already stripped of its Gold Leaf by the following morning. A prisoner escaping from the town jail stopped to talk with this reporter. "They took the 'Bacca Leaf, then the Gold Leaf - seems about the only leaf around here anymore is durned illegal and against the law too, as in also".

Linking Lands & Communities

Land-of-Sky Regional Council has been working with individuals, local governments and organizations across our four-county region to learn where the most valuable natural resources and working lands are located in the region. We have gathered a lot of data and utilized partners’ expertise to develop a set of science-based maps that identify lands that are valuable for wildlife habitat and maintaining biodiversity; producing clean water; and for farming and forestry. We also have maps showing the many recreational and cultural resources in the region.

We will share these maps with you at the Open House, as well as some context for the project and what to expect from the next steps and final products. We want your feedback on the maps and project and hope you will share your values and concerns related to our region’s natural systems.

The next steps of the project include identifying ways to be more proactive about maintaining a network of these natural systems in order to sustain the valuable services nature provides to our communities. Future development patterns will then be compared to this network of natural systems. The goal is to develop a valuable set of data, maps and other tools that can help local governments, land trusts, developers, and landowners make land use and development decisions and inform future planning. We will be bringing the results of each major step of the project to regional leaders and the public to promote understanding and seek feedback.

The Board of Adjustment will consider the proposed Concrete Plant use on October 26th at 7pm at the courthouse. It will require 4 out of the 5 board members to grant this conditional use. Due to previous objections that this will be injurious to the community and residents, the county attorney wants the Board of Adjustments to decide if this use should be allowed at this location. The meeting is open to the public.

KEITH FLYNN is an award-winning poet, singer, and editor who has published five books of poetry and essays, and is the founder and managing editor of The Asheville Poetry Review. From 1984-1998, Flynn was the lead singer and lyricist for The Crystal Zoo, a nationally-acclaimed rock band that released three albums. This new incarnation, The Holy Men, provides musical accompaniment to poems from all of Flynn's books, as well as new songs and re-imagined versions of Flynn's back catalog of recorded material.

Madison County Fair, October 7th - 10th

Time for the County Fair! The Madison County Fair will be held on the fairgrounds of the Madison County Cooperative Extension Agency from October 7th through the 10th. The fair will be the 2nd county fair held in Madison County, NC since 1949. Last years' fair was a big success.

Planned events include; rides, produce and cooking competitions, livestock competitions, special contests and exhibits. 4-H certified livestock and horse shows. Registration forms are available at the Madison County Arts Center 90 South Main Street in Marshall.

Directions to 258 Carolina Lane, Marshall, NC 28753.

From Asheville take 19-23/I26 North to the Marshall Exit 19-A. Follow Hwy 25/70 North/West for 9.3 miles, after the 4 lane road becomes a 2 lane road turn RIGHT onto LONG BRANCH ROAD (Do not take the first Long Branch Road off the four lane). *See below for further directions on Long Branch Road.

From 25/70 South/East turn LEFT onto Long Branch Road.

From Mars Hill (I-26) take Exit 11 to HWY 213 toward Marshall approximately 11 miles. At the 25/70 intersection take the Asheville exit onto 25/70 SE. Once on 25/70 take the second paved road to the left, LONG BRANCH ROAD. *See below for further directions on Long Branch Road.

(Look for NC Cooperative Extension signs at each of the turn offs;
these signs will be low to the ground)

Once on LONG BRANCH ROAD go .4 miles and turn RIGHT onto KENPACK LANE (first road on the right). Then go .2 miles and turn RIGHT onto ELDERBERRY LANE (first road on the right), then IMMEDIATELY turn LEFT onto CAROLINA LANE.

Go .2 miles (you will pass ball fields on the left) and Madison County Cooperative Extension will be to your left (you will see NC Cooperative Extension sign in front of parking lot and a sign on the building).

If you happen to be in the West Asheville area this week, Bookworks has extended its book exhibit. Well worth checking out. The demos there last Saturday were fantastic with tons of people through their doors. Probably the best open studio event I've ever been to.
